Salary calculations based on market data

Salary calculations based on market data

Model a raise, get the new compensation and comp ratio, and time it to the person's work anniversary and regular pay cycle. Compare the data to market data and get pros and cons for different strategies.

What it does

Whether you’re a technical founder running compensation without a People team or an HR leader planning a raise cycle, you get an easy-to-understand raise decision in one message, in the tools you already work in, with no comp spreadsheet to rebuild.

Ask a plain-language question about a raise and get back the new salary, the compensation ratio against the band you’re targeting, and a recommended start date drawn from the employee’s work anniversary and regular pay dates. The numbers come straight from your live records. Ask additional questions to compare the proposed salary to market data, and get different pros and cons for different strategies.

Disclaimer: This use case helps you model and time compensation changes. It isn’t legal, tax, or pay-equity advice.

Ready

Setting up your MCP connection

Before you start, connect your AI app to Plane. In an MCP-compatible client (such as Claude or ChatGPT), add Plane as a remote connector using the link below. For more detailed instructions, check out our MCP guide.

Setting up Plane Agent

To turn on Plane Agent, sign into your Plane account and go to the Features catalog. Note that Plane Agent is currently in beta.

Option A: Use your AI app and Plane MCP

Step 1: Ask for the raise scenario

Ask for the employee's salary details and raise calculations in plain language.

Step 2: Comp ratio + effective date in one pass

Drill in on additional details, such as calculating the employee's compensation ratio and calculating when the new salary should go into effect.

Tip: Compensation ratio = salary ÷ band midpoint.

Step 3: Market gut-check

Ask your AI app to research the new salary against market data, to help make sure it's a competitive salary.

Step 4: Compare strategies

Ask for three strategies and their pros and cons.

Step 5: Pick a strategy and apply it

Once you’ve decided on a strategy and salary number, apply the compensation change in Plane for the effective date. Note: Plane MCP is currently read-only.

Option B: Ask Plane Agent (in Slack)

If you prefer to work in Slack, Plane Agent brings the same capability into the channels you already use. (Note: Plane Agent is also available in Plane, too.)

Step 1: Ask for the raise scenario

Describe the raise and name the employee, using plain language.

Step 2: Comp ratio + effective date

Give the band midpoint and ask for the compensation ratio and suggested date for the raise to go into effect.

Step 3: Sanity-check against the market

Compare the proposed salary to market data, so you can check that it's competitive. Note that Plane Agent currently cannot visit a webpage such as plane.com/salaries and pull public salary data, so you’ll need to manually provide your own market data.

Step 4: Compare strategies

Ask for three strategies and their pros and cons.

Step 5: Review and act

Review the strategies, pick one, and apply the change in Plane when ready.

What you'll need

  • A Plane workspace with the employee’s employment and compensation records

  • Permission to view that worker’s compensation

  • Your target salary band / midpoint for the role

  • Plane Agent enabled or an MCP-compatible AI client (e.g., Claude or ChatGPT) connected to Plane

Good to know

Tip 1

Plane MCP gives you access to salary data for your workers

Tip 2

AI tends to agree with you. Ask for options with pros and cons; comparison beats flattery and sycophancy
