Visualize time off data

Visualize time off data

Customize a visual dashboard of your team’s time-off data, to easily see the PTO data that you need. Then, keep your dashboard up-to-date and shareable with Claude Artifacts.

What it does

PTO data doesn’t have to just be in spreadsheet form. Instead, you can use your favorite AI app like Claude to connect to Plane’s MCP server and create a custom, visual dashboard of time-off data. Dig even deeper into AI by using Claude Artifacts to create a shareable dashboard that is synced to your Plane data and regularly updated.

1

State your goals, ask for three versions

2

Customize the dashboard further

3

Download the version you want

Setting up your MCP connection

Before you start, connect your AI app to Plane. In an MCP-compatible client (such as Claude or ChatGPT), add Plane as a remote connector using the link below. For more detailed instructions, check out our MCP guide.

Step 1: State your goals and ask for three versions of a dashboard, as a starting point

When you first enter your prompt into your AI app, you don’t need to have a clear idea of what the dashboard will look like. Instead, use your initial prompt as a starting point and ask for different dashboard versions that you can give feedback on. Note that how you word your prompt will depend on how you word your leave policies and what specifically you’re looking for (e.g., “paid time off” vs. “vacation”).

Step 2: Customize the dashboard further

Once your AI app shows the different dashboard versions, choose your preferred one and give feedback. For example:

Step 3: Download the version that you want

After your AI app has customized the dashboard to your liking, you can download it as an HTML file. If the result isn’t already a downloadable HTML file, you can request this.

Step 4 (optional): Dig deeper and experiment with Claude Artifacts

If you’re using Claude Cowork, you can optionally upload the HTML dashboard that you just downloaded and ask Claude to create an artifact of it (or, Claude Cowork may even just suggest creating an artifact for you; if this is the case, just choose ‘Create’ when it offers that option).

Once Claude has created the artifact, you’ll be able to access it in the Artifacts section in the left panel of Claude in the future. A big advantage to using Claude Cowork to create an artifact is that it pulls fresh data every time you open it, and you can share a link to it with your teammates.

Note: You can also create an artifact if you’re using Claude Chat, but the artifact’s data will stay static and will not be refreshed each time you open it. To get an artifact that stays up-to-date, you’ll need to upload the HTML dashboard from Claude Chat into Claude Cowork and then ask Claude Cowork to create an artifact.

What you'll need

  • A Plane workspace with your people, their departments, and recorded time off

  • Admin access in Plane

  • An MCP-compatible AI client (e.g., Claude or ChatGPT) connected to Plane

Good to know

Tip 1

Don't describe the visualization. Ask AI for options, then refine

Tip 2

Claude Cowork artifacts update automatically when your Plane MCP data changes
