Help Scout is a customer support software company with a fully distributed team. Based in Boston, Massachusetts, the company was founded in 2011 and has since grown to over 130 employees, all working remotely. About 40 of those team members are contractors located in more than 15 countries around the world.
Managing global payments for so many different people was once a major challenge. Before Plane, the team relied on a mix of bank transfers and TransferWise. Jenny Rush, VP of Finance and Controller at Help Scout, recalls the early process:
“We had a spreadsheet with every contractor, their currency, and their invoices. We’d manually match invoices, log into the bank to enter wire transfers, or use TransferWise depending on the payment. It was time-consuming, nerve-wracking, and error-prone. We’d double and triple check every field to make sure we didn’t make a mistake.”

💜 Plane
Saved hours each month by eliminating manual spreadsheets and wires
Improved accuracy and confidence in payments
Delivered a better experience for contractors with self-service onboarding and transparency
Each contractor’s currency determined which process to follow, which meant managing multiple workflows every month. “It wasn’t scalable,” says Jenny. “We were paying 40 contractors, all over the world, and each payment could require a different process.”
Plane streamlined everything into one workflow. “Now it’s easy. We just click, select who we want to pay, and process the payment,” Jenny explains. “It saves hours of time and gives us the confidence that we’re paying people correctly and on time.”
One of the biggest benefits has been self-service onboarding. Instead of sharing sensitive banking information over email, contractors create their own Plane account, upload invoices, and track payments themselves. “That was really important to us,” Jenny notes. “They can see their record of transactions, when payments are processed, and we don’t have to manage that data manually anymore.”
Plane also extends beyond contractor payments. Help Scout uses the platform for one-off payments, such as reimbursing board members for travel expenses or compensating candidates for project-based interview work. “Anytime we need to make a payment outside our regular accounts payable process, Plane makes it simple,” Jenny says.
Support has been another key differentiator. International payments can sometimes get delayed by intermediary banks, leaving contractors waiting and uncertain. “When that happens, Plane is who we go to,” Jenny explains. “They’re responsive and helpful, and they give us clear answers we can communicate back to our team members.”
Today, Help Scout continues to rely on Plane as a core part of its finance operations. “We’ve been using Plane for over five years now,” Jenny says. “It works, it’s reliable, and it saves us so much time. For us, it’s about efficiency, accuracy, and giving our contractors a professional, transparent experience.”
