"How does this payroll run compare to last month’s?" "Why did the number jump?" "What does that team actually cost us once taxes are in?" These questions come up often but rarely have quick answers. Answering them usually means lining the numbers up in a spreadsheet, building pivot tables, reconciling totals, and shaping it all into something a stakeholder can read, often right before a budget review or a board meeting.

It doesn't have to work that way. When an AI assistant like Claude or ChatGPT can reach your payroll history, the same analysis takes seconds. You ask in plain language, and it hands back a comparison, a breakdown, or a trend, together with the figures behind each one. Need it split by team, by worker type, or traced across your last six runs? Say the word, and pull it as a table, a chart, or a PDF that slots right into your next finance review.

This post walks through how to do exactly that. Plane users have two front doors to the same capability: Plane Agent, the AI teammate that lives in your Slack, and our MCP server. We'll use Plane for the walkthrough.

Option A: Ask Plane Agent in Slack

If you'd rather not leave Slack, Plane Agent brings the same capability into the channels you already use.

Setting up Plane Agent

To turn on Plane Agent in Slack, sign into your Plane account and go to the Features catalog. Note that Plane Agent is currently in beta.

Step 1: Ask your payroll question

Ask in plain language:

Step 2: Follow up

Drill into anything that stands out. Ask Plane Agent to explain a jump or isolate a single team. You can also request the data in a specific format, such as a chart or a PDF:

Step 3: Keep asking more follow-up questions as needed

You can also request the data in a specific format, such as a chart or a PDF:

Plane Agent returns the PDF right in Slack, ready for you to review, share, or hand to finance.

Option B: Use your AI assistant with Plane's MCP server

If your team already works in an AI assistant like Claude or ChatGPT, you can connect it to Plane once and ask your payroll questions right there.

Setting up your MCP connection

Before you start, you’ll connect your assistant to Plane. In an MCP-compatible client, add Plane as a remote connector using the link below. For more detailed instructions, check out our MCP guide.

Step 1: Ask your payroll question

Describe what you want the same way you'd explain it to a colleague. Name the payroll runs to compare and what analysis you’d like:

Plane reads your payroll history, works out the answer, and shows you the numbers behind it.

Step 2: Drill into anything that stands out

Follow up on whatever catches your eye. Ask the assistant to explain a jump or isolate a single team. You can also ask for the data in a specific shape:

Step 3: Keep asking more follow-up questions as needed

Continue to drill into your data. You can also request the data in a specific format, such as a a table, chart, or PDF.

If your AI assistant is connected to your docs or spreadsheets, you can have it drop the results straight into a file for your next finance review.

What you'll need

To get started, you'll need a Plane workspace with payroll history and admin access. For Plane Agent, you'll need it enabled in your Slack workspace, via the Features catalog. For the MCP route, you'll need an MCP-compatible AI client such as Claude or ChatGPT connected to Plane.
