How to Register Your Business in Massachusetts

Register your business in Massachusetts in three easy steps:

  1. First, you’ll need to create an account online with the MassTaxConnect so that you can register with the Department of Revenue.
  2. Under “Quick Links,” you’ll find “Register a new taxpayer.” After selecting that, choose “Register a business” and complete the online registration process.
  3. Next, you’ll need to register with the Department of Unemployment Assistance, by completing the online registration form.
Once you’ve received your account numbers from the Department of Unemployment Assistance and the Department of Revenue, you’ll be able to register new employees, file wage reports, and submit unemployment taxes online. Remember, in Massachusetts, you are generally liable for unemployment taxes if you have one or more employees working on one or more days in each of 13 weeks during a calendar year, or if you pay wages of $1,500 or more in any calendar quarter.You should receive your account numbers immediately after completing registration.
